'Kids Like These' - DOWN'S SYNDROMEWhat is it?Down's syndrome (also called Down syndrome) is a genetic condition known as trisomy, where a person inherits an extra copy of one chromosome. People with the syndrome have three copies of chromosome 21 rather than two.This additional genetic material changes the finely tuned balance of the body and results in characteristic physical and intellectual features.It's not known why this abnormality occurs, but it affects around one in 1,000 babies born in the UK - about 750 babies a year - and is the most common cause of learning disability.Different typesThere are three types of Down's syndrome:Regular trisomy 21 - all the cells have an extra chromosome 21. Around 94 per cent of people with Down's syndrome have this type.Translocation - the extra chromosome 21 material is attached to another chromosome and one of the parents may carry the translocated chromosome without any signs of the condition themselves. This accounts for around 4 per cent of cases.Mosaic - only some of the cells have an extra chromosome 21. Around two per cent of people with Down's have this type, which tends to result in milder features.What are the symptoms?People with Down's syndrome tend to look different they typically have a flat facial profile and eyes that slant upwards. Other facial features include smaller ears, a flat back of the head and protruding tongue.People with the syndrome also tend to be shorter than average with poor muscle tone and have short, broad hands with a single crease across the palm.Almost half of people affected have heart defects, some of which can be treated, some of which can't. Many also have gut problems, which can make eating difficult and increases the risk of problems such as constipation and disorders of the thyroid gland.Other physical problems include cataracts, hearing and sight problems, and a susceptibility to infections. Later in life there's also an increased risk of leukaemia and Alzheimers dementia.People with Down's syndrome have varying degrees of learning disability, which may range from moderate to severe. Autistic spectrum disorders are also more common.What's the treatment?There's no cure, but treatment of any accompanying health problems and support for learning difficulties allows many people with the syndrome to lead relatively normal and semi-independent lives. Others, however, need full-time care. Many people with the condition live well into adulthood, with an average life expectancy of around 60 years.Physiotherapy, speech therapy and special educational programmes have an important role to play, while specific medical conditions associated with the syndrome are treated as appropriate.Who's affected?The chance of having a baby with Down's syndrome increases with the age of the mother, especially over the age of 35. But as the majority of women have their children when they're younger, most Down's babies are born to younger parents.Having a child with Down's syndrome is more likely if a woman already has a child with the syndrome, or if a close family member has had an affected child. Mia's P.O.V.Molly and I were sat in Miss Lawrence's hardihood class. Miss Lawrence was one of those teachers, who wore jam jars for glasses and had no fashion sense whatsoever. She walked approximately the classroom throwing interrogatorys at students, laboring to get off the subjects that else pupils were bringing up. Miss asked everybody to close their eyes, and raise their hands if they'd ever olden in positive situations. One of the catechisms was "Have you ever skipped periods?" She over asked us to keep our eyes closed and put out our hands, so she could give us an appointment with the school nurse if we had raised our hands. I held my hand out, nervously waiting for a sheet of paper. I downstream felt a sensation of relief, thinking I'd got out of that; but formerly she put a slip of paper in my hand. My heart started pounding in my chest and to be perfectly honest I didn't differentiate why! My mom had already addicted me the 'talk' and I was perfectly aware of whole, so why should I be worried? The bell rang, and I subtly put the slip in my jeans pocket. As we were passing the school doors, leading to the way haunt Molly brought up the lesson, "So, did you get inured one of those slips?" She pulled the slip of paper out of my hand and appearing at it, while biting the lid of her pen. "Well are you unrecompensed now?" she asked me. I wasn't assured what to say, as I knew Molly was waiting for me same though she had singing lessons after school. "Is it alright if I go and let my friend comprehend she can go after me?" I asked hoping she would let me. "Okay, but don't be king-size. I have a life outside of school too you see." She answered bitterly. I rested my bag on the bed in the room and ran out to let Molly realize what was happening. I lied. I would reel off her, if it was paramount; but it's a personal thing. She didn't mind and left outdoors me as I quickly returned back to the Nurse's office. "Right where were we? I believe your agnomen is Mia Armstrong?" She asked. "Yes, that's me. "I reckon you better get tested." She pulled out a box, and handed it to me. I decent sat there appearing at it. No speech, no emotions, no something. I sat there blankly for a few minutes before it finally went into my head. I couldn't believe I was unvarying at that stage of the situation... but for all I knew, it could dependable be... a false alarm, with any luck that is. So I took the box and slipped it into my bag, covering it in my coat. I left the Nurse's office and shut the door, heading address. No car was parked in the joyride so I assumed my parents weren't roof yet. I was glad, if the substantiation was negative thereupon I could rightful put it all behind me and no one would ever have to fathom. People on the RPF may only eat the food left over after the other SO members have eaten, may not speak to a Sea Org member unless spoken to, are not allowed to walk (they must run everywhere), are not allowed holidays, receive even less pay than org members, brainwashed even more than org members and are required to do hard manual labour for long hours.
